The Dive
Frankland Island Cruises operates a trip that is very different from other companies in Cairns. The boat visits an island much closer to shore than other dive sites, making this a great trip for families, or groups including non-divers. After a short 20 minute cruise down the glassy Mulgrave River it takes just 20 minutes to cross to Normanby Island, one of the Frankland Islands, a small chain of islands located just a few miles offshore.
 This small undeveloped island has some very nice beaches, short hikes, and other things for you and your less dive-oriented friends to do when not in the water.
The diving areas here are more subject to near shore conditions, (reduced visibility) but are also sheltered from waves by both the outer Barrier Reef and the island itself. Many of the dive sites and beach areas are shallow protected dives, making this an ideal diving area for snorkelers, novice divers, or first-timers taking their introductory dives. This is a good area to spot sea turtles and one the only places that divers might see dugongs, an Asian-pacific species of manatee.
This is the only boat permitted to visit Normanby Island, so your group will have the island to yourselves. It is also the only trip offering a BBQ lunch catered by the Red Ocher Grill, one of the best Restaurants in Cairns.
The Boat
The boat used for this trip is a large power reef catamaran, a type used by many dive operators worldwide. It makes for a quick and very stable ride out to the islands. The maximum capacity allowed on this custom designed boat is 100, many of whom do not dive. Usually there are around 20 divers on board.

Frankland Islands Cruise and Dive is a locally owned and operated company, and has been in business since 1990. Their parent company (also locally owned and operated), The Natural Adventure Company, also operates white water rafting tours under the name Raft-n-Rainforest, and was one of the pioneering adventure travel operators in the Cairns area many years ago.
