This trip is aboard Fitzroy I, a 24 foot Catamaran with a maximum of 24 divers and a Dive Staff of 1. It is for 1 day, and allows 2 dives.
Departure Information
Departure is from E Berth, Great Adventures Terminal, Cairns at 8:30 AM every day, return time 6:00 PM.
The Dive
Ths trip out to Fitzroy Island is a unique option, as boat time is minimized, and there is an island full of interesting distractions to investigate in between or after your dives. Groups with mixed diving experience may find this a good choice. Snorkelers can explore right off the beach, or take the tender out to dive sites further offshore on a snorkelers only trip that departs the island at 12:30pm. Non-divers can explore the largely undeveloped island.
After taking the ferry out to the island divers board the dive tender to make the quick 5-15 minute trip out to the many dive sites around the island. Between dives the tender returns to shore, allowing you to relax on the beach or enjoy the other amenities offered on the island. Scuba dive trips depart from island marina at 10:30am and 2:30pm daily
The ferry makes three trips daily between Fitzroy Island and Cairns, which creates a little additional flexibility handy for families and mixed groups. We have not yet been able to dive on the island, but urge you to read a write-ups of diving there in our reef reports for March 9, 2001 and July 29, 2000
The Boat
In the case of this operation, two boats are involved. You will first board one of several large and fast ferryboats that operate between the port of Cairns and Fitzroy Island. These boats take around 40 minutes to make the trip, can take upwards of 100 people at a time, and do it in a very clean, comfortable and smooth style.
The boat used as your dive platform is a 20-foot aluminum dive tender. A pontoon boat, it provides more than ample deck and gear space for the short 5-15 minute trips it makes between the pier and the many dive sites that are found around the island. The tender takes no more than 24 divers at a time out to the reef, and the manager tells us that the normal group size is 12 or fewer divers.
