This trip is aboard Calypso, a 76 foot Mono Hull with a maximum of 50 divers. It is for 1 day, and allows 3 dives.
Departure Information
Departure is from Marina Mirage, berth C8, Port Douglas at 9:00 AM every day, return time 4:30 PM.
The Dive
The Calypso has a roving permit, enabling it to choose dive sites spread over an extensive area. The boat usually visits two large reefs, Opal and Tongue. However, if the best diving is somewhere else that day, the boat has the flexibility to visit Chinaman, Rudder, St. Crispins or one of the Agincourt Reefs. It usually takes between 70 and 90 minutes to reach the first dive site, depending on the reef chosen that day.
The boat will visit three dive sites during the day, allowing certified divers to make three dives, and snorkelers to see three different reefs.
The Boat
The folks are Calypso are very proud of their new boat, which was custom built to their specifications. Launched in May of 2004, the new Eclipse is 76 feet long, and can carry up to 50 divers and snorkelers out to the reef. The boat has enclosed and shaded areas, as well as a substantial sundeck to allow as much or little sun as one desires. The boat is powerful, and makes an easy smooth ride out to the reef at 22 knots.
A stern-width submerged dive deck allows for easy entrances and exits from the water. Rinse tanks and a hot freshwater deck shower are available to clean your gear and to warm up if you core temp starts diving with you.
