The Coral Sea Reefs; Osprey Reef,
Holmes Reef, and Flinders Reef
Adventurous Diving, Amazing Visibility,
and Really Big Fish
Like big fish and great visibility? If you are a bit adventurous, a trip
out to the Coral Sea Reefs might just be the perfect trip for you.
Outside the Great Barrier Reef
Technically, these reefs are not a part of the Great Barrier Reef; they
lie from 20-60 miles outside of the reef, an overnight trip for most dive
boats. Of the small number of isolated reefs in the Corals Sea, Osprey
Holmes, Bouganville and Flinders Reefs are the reef complexes most often
visited.
Amazing Visibility, really big fish.
Located out in the open ocean these isolated reefs have consistently amazing
visibility. It’s always over 30 meters, and often better than that.
The open ocean isolation also draws in large pelagic fish such as dogtooth
tuna, mackerel and barracuda. These reefs are great places to spot sharks
of all kinds, especially white tipped reef sharks.
Over the past 20 years, feeding by dive operators at certain dive spots
has caused the resident reef sharks, potato cod and other fish to become
accustomed to divers; they are not skittish and allow close observation.
Some operators offer a shark feed dive, where sharks are drawn in to a
feeding station. Be sure to follow the instructions of the divemaster
on these and all dives, you are a long ways from medical help out here.
A variety of dive opportunities.
These reefs offer a combination of diving, from dramatic wall dives to
intricate coral formations, huge soft corals and reef flats. The diving
and snorkeling are great, although the trips tend to draw largely divers.
Four to Seven day trips.
Trips to the Coral Sea Reefs range from 4-6 days in length. While the
diving is adventurous, some of the boats are amazing comfortable, even
luxurious, in terms of the food and comfort they offer aboard. Most trips
going to Osprey Reef usually do a day or two of diving on the Ribbon Reefs,
which also offer outstanding diving. There are a number of different trips
to choose from, one may suit you perfectly!
